SMILE
I was watching a documentary about a man who worked in a post office but in his spare time was a photographer. This was extraordinary because he was a black man living after the reconstruction of the south. His family was middle class and still live in Columbia, South Carolina. The Documentary displayed the pictures he captured and I noticed no one smiled. It got me to thinking and I realized that black people did not smile in their photographs back then.. Some looked like they wanted to but they were scared.. So I wrote this:
I never saw them smile
There was a fight in their eyes
And there lips did curl upward sometimes
But I never saw them smile
Time taught them that no one wanted to witness their happiness
Their elation
This nation
Did not want to know the black man’s joy
So I never saw them smile
Old photographs of the ancestors that loved us even then
Bring tears to my eyes
For my freedom, REAL freedom, they died
I can still hear their war cries
But I’ve never seen them smile
I’m sure they looked for God
And found him in sunsets and on horizons
I know without hearing
That they laughed at their trials and tribulation some days
And smiled at their children on other days
But the camera did flash that day
And they did not smile
I’ve seen them hanging from trees
Set to flame
I’ve seen them on thrones
And playing their games
I’ve seen them mid-croon
Or relaxed for a while
But never have I ever seen my ancestors smile
So smile
Children of struggle
Brown and beautiful
Smile big
And show the world you cannot be broken
Happiness is your shield
God is your sword
Love is the key
Truly
I say, the trees remember our fathers
And the blood of our mothers run deep
Make them proud
Let’s compile
Pictures of our smile…

I am the nature of earth… (add a good pic!!)
The sun shines on me
The water flows toward me
Fire blows smoke my way
Because they know their mother
I am the nature of earth
And the elements answer me
With beauty and mystery
Carries
Love on wind
Toward horizons
That draw the unsuspected in
And they meet me
Where water and sky collide
And dreams live…
My temporary home is beautiful
But at I am home-sick
And long for heaven
In no rush
But days seem so long without
A tangible caress from God
Who loves me better than the earth
Better than Fire
Better than water
Better than the sun
See
He gave me all these things and
Created me to be the nature of earth
The elements answer me
Because he has given me dominion
And my decisions are based upon
His wisdom
And the love of a mother in my heart so I tell them to..
Shine
Flow
Blow smoke
Turn day to night and night to day
Walk in circles because there is always something you missed before
Yes,
The elements know their mother
I am the nature of earth….

I am an African flower cut from her roots and planted in American soil
And I just can’t seem to grow right
I glow at night
And at dawn I am a beautiful sight
Still
I just can’t seem to grow right.
And no one picks me
Seems I’m marred by my history
And I stick out like my sore thumb
Amid these American ones
I cry, “Someone pick me!!”
But alas
I just cant seem to grow right
And my homeland shakes her head in displeasure..
Someone take me home or bring some of it to me
So that I might flourish
The way it’s meant to be
See
I was taken from my home
Cut from my roots
And now I just can’t seem to grow right…
I am beautiful
But it is obvious that I don’t belong here..

Yin begs Yang (A lover’s final plea) ?
We were one magic and now split, we can barely move.
Soothe me with the other half of my soul.
Hold me, Yang.
Your Yin needs you.
I inhale all your day time and aggression.
I breathe you.
You shine like suns do.
You’re mine,
I long to
Find you again
Blend day and night again
Make life magic again
One more time
Don’t you remember baby?
We were one magic once…
Now split, we can barely move.
Let’s prove
That together we can move
Mountains
But first,
Soothe me with the other half of my soul
Hold me Yang.
Your Yin needs you.
Needs to
Inhale your day time and aggression
To
Breathe you
To bask in your sun
Like galaxies do
Blend day and night again
Make magic life again
Make love
Us again..
Your Yin needs her friend…
Come now, let’s mend.
Will post spoken word version soon.

Conversation with a rose…
Last night
A rose traded secrets with me
She said she didn’t have much longer to live
Her days were as numbered as a million women
A million angels
A million demons,
Yes she was, in her own words,
Both good and evil
Full of sweetness and beauty
Cursed with lust and thorns
Adorned
Church steps
And kitchen tables
The other woman’s sheets
And the wife’s “apology bouquet”
I giggled as she opened wide for me
The mystery
Of her sweetness
She said, “share this..”
“But only with the man you truly love”
I smiled knowingly
And then there grew this hope in me
Like love with wings to fly over the universes
But I then I saw her
Wilting
Her last words were a wind of rose scent and sounded like
“With your help, I am a rose that will never die”
And as she laid at my feet
I sang a sweet
Requiem
And vowed to live
Like the best part of a rose’s life….
